style address regarding Michael Turner and Chasen

Thu Jan 12, 2006, 7:12 PM
I've been keeping an eye on certain arguements around the internet debating the style in which I have chosen to draw, and how it is a, "bad knock off of Turner's style". I would like to make a public statement about this debate.

Mood: Cool methodical
Listening to: digitally imported radio
Reading: Ecru: the Butcher of Balis
Watching: chronicles of Narnia

A PUBLIC STYLE:

First of all, yes, I enjoy drawing in the style Mark Silvestri and Michael Turner developed , I am truely guilty of this crime, and I have committed this heinous sin, so sue me. Countless artists of any career field have done the same of their mentors, so lets all lynch them too. Out of all the comic art I have ever seen in my life, Silvestri, and Turner's style is the only style that has held any interest for me. I have never stated I created the style, nor do I deny that I have tried to emulate this style. Full credit is given here to the men who invented a style. I enjoy drawing in their style because it appeals to me, and if I choose to develop stories and characters while using that style, it is my perogative, and I will do so, and there is quite frankly no way any one can stop me from doing so. If that draws public scorn than so be it. The style is difficult to draw in, and those who have tried it will know that I speak the truth. Its not that I have desired to be original with the technique I use, those words never came out of my mouth. I have said I want to make original stories. which I still plan to do. but my goal was not to develop a style. I have simply attempted to do something most people seem to believe they are unable to do. Which at the very least should be an inspiration to the aspiring artist. In which case I have done what I set out to do in a public setting.

TURNER'S OPINION OF MY WORK:

Secondly, I have met Mr. Turner and showed him my work on more than one occassion, in each case my artwork has been met with enthusiasm and awe by him. Don't you know its flattering to have some one running around out there that draws in your style and does a damn good job of it. The way I draw is in honor of something that was started by a great human being, and if I receive ridicule for it then go right ahead and speak your piece, but I probably wont hear it as wise council. Don't you know, acceptance from the one person whom it is saught from is more valuable than all of the inane bable of a thousand nay sayers. Simply put, Mr. Turner even personally told me he liked my work, and wanted me to work with his company, so why not continue to work the way I want?

LIBEL IS FLAT OUT WRONG:

Another point I would like to address, is against libelous remarks. Its one thing to express an opinion about dislking a person's work. Its quite another when you start calling a person names because you can't stand their work for whatever personal reason you have. You are entitled to your opinion, and you are entitled to communicate your opinion publicly, but please have the courtesy to express yourself in a diplomatic manner without resorting to name calling. Libelous remarks are dishonorable and will not be condoned by me.

Recently a question was posed saying, "since you like how Turner draws you like how he draws? Or do you like how p9 draws?" This question validly states an obvious point. Many people like the way I illustrate my work because it has been drawn in honor of the style Silvestri, and Turner have created. A style that is already in public domain, and free for anyone to attempt to draw in.

I will close by saying, the claims of those who would call me a bad knock off, an artist without a soul, a copycat, and all the other names I have been called, will indeed fall silent as those claims are discoverd to be the rambelings of an ingnorant thought process. I have been as upright as I can be with my claims and my abilities. God has granted me many abilities that many do not yet know I posses, and as such I will do the best that I can with those abilities. I will continue to draw and color in a manner that suits me, and I will continue to release my artwork publicly reguardless of public scorn and ridicule.

sincerely

I have to say that I'm shocked that someone would actually say something like that to you. I like that you draw similar to Turners style. Or as the matter of fact, I love it! Hence the reason I'm watching you damnit...!
I love Turner and Silvestri's work... The first "real" comic I ever read was witchblade...and basicly, I owe my love for drawing to Turner.
My work is nothing like his...he's so awsome... @_@

And yay for you continue to draw the way you do. I often browse your gallery. :3
But I'm having a hard time choosing what to fav...darn you... u_u;
Ha, im on your side ^_^
" Out of all the comic art I have ever seen in my life, Silvestri, and Turner's style is the only style that has held any interest for me."

I never was really into comics that much when I was younger but Michale Turners fatom brought me back to the world of comics. He reignited my intrest for drawing and persue a future carear in art.

Ive loved all his work, and from there I got into other comic books and other great artists. I too am trying to learn to draw in turners style while at the same time devleoping my own. Its my base for all that I may do in the future. im no where near the level of you or turner but then again im still just 17 and kinda lazy @__@;;; Heh I have a problem with getting motivaited to even pick up a pencil, and when I do I get put off sometimes thinking "theres now way Illget that good". Yet anytime I go into my turner reference art folder and look at some of his art I get motivated again.

You keep doing what your doing I enjoy your work :D

Your artwork captured my eye cause it reminded me of Michael Turners work but I still saw something you put into it that was your own. I try to draw in the style of my favorite artist cause I learn better that way. Plus it developes into my own little style in time. Plus thats pretty unfair for people to judge you like that. People who draw in Anime style use the same basic style and nobody calls them a copy.

I love the way you draw and yah I guess it's cause it reminds of Turners artwork. But your also very talented. Plus alot of your designs are amazing. What mostly captured me about your work was some of your fantasy style artwork. Not that it just looked like Turners style.

Theres always gonna be people who name call and there very childish to do that. If they don't like it then they should ignore it.

Get the hint?
i regret i may to be blame for one of the threads you refer to.
it was not my intent for it to go the way it did.

its not your fault because it has been going on long before now. Its just that now I see its a little larger than it was before, and so I decided I needed to post my own view.

dude,
heres the deal.you draw well.you maybe copyin their style or whatever but you admit that and you r not denying it.you can take a look at ur anatomy and ur backgrounds and they r done good.so anyone talkin shit is just a fuckin hater man.
take a look at all the kids work that talk shit about ur work.i can bet without ever seein any of that shit that ur better than atleast 80% of them.cause anyone who i ever met who is actually good has no reason to be hatin on someones work.plus like the comment from above.all the anime kids.not one anime biter can talk shit cause they r all copyin a style.
everyone has to start somewhere and they all look at someone they admire.you just chose to stick to that style, you like it,YOU think it looks good.as long as u dont actually COPY his drawings fuck the people who talk shit.they most likely suck anyways.that pisses me off to man.i just went off on a rant but s'all good.
p.s. dont let people bring u down....they're not even worth worryin about man.
sorry to hear that someone that takes so much time to draw like his roll model, would be ridiculed by people for doing so. this is the way art evolves, he learn from other and add a personal touch. if we didnt learn from each other and help one another we would still be classifying cave drawings as the greatest pieces of art.
Well, some could say that Jim Lee is, in a form, a copycat of Marc Silvestri, and that Marc is a copycat of Whilce Portacio... Heck, they shared studio space at one time and probably borrowed more than a few ideas from one another... As did every artist who ever looked at someone else's work and said, "I like that style." By emulation, we tend to gravitate toward what "looks right" to us.

Frankly, it boils down to one thing: are you "in the business" of making comics? Your answer is obviously yes. Because you're pro, you're work is going to be analyzed, held up for example, and the naysayers will attempt to tear you down. Should you stop drawing like Chasen or anyone else just because someone else says so? No. Not unless it's an editor...

Don't sweat the naysayers. Hand 'em a pencil and paper and say "Here... do better than me." Watch how fast they shut their traps and wander off muttering. Having had an opportunity to actually *work* in comics (inking assistant on WetWorks back in '95-'96 amongst other titles), I know that it's not easy at all... and it makes it even tougher when some know-it-all thinks they've got something to prove at your expense.

Keep doing your thing your way. Influences will show in your work because they *have* to. But as far as "copying a style"? Nah... you're making your own way.

Hang in there.
